Urban Poor Make 50% of City’s Population

The urban poor make up half the city’s population, early estimates of the 2011 census indicate. The headcount was conducted by the Pune Municipal Corporation between February 9 and February 28. “Detailed figures and census data will be available only after the Census Commission releases the official data,” said city census officer Praveen Ashtikar. He said that a rise in population in any urban conglomeration and a scarcity of affordable housing would mean slums coming up. Read More
