Mapping Out Disaster, Relief, and Recovery

Today’s mapmaker is a mix of social scientist, field worker, graphic artist, and techie. Looking for a more creative way to tell the stories of relief, recovery, and development, USAID—and in particular, the parts of the Agency that work in political transition and disaster response environments—have turned to such mapmakers and developed Geographic Information Units (GIU), expert teams of geospatial data analysts. The new USAID Geospatial Center is building on this foundation to increase spatial mapping capacity Agency-wide.
