JAXA to Launch Satellite; original GPS Plan on Hold

ASAHI SHIMBUN –  Amid growing calls for an independent Japanese global position system, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will launch a satellite Saturday to complement a U.S. satellite network and improve GPS services in Japan.  Japan currently relies on a U.S. network of 30 satellites, including backup orbiters, to provide GPS services to Japanese drivers, cellphone users and surveyors across the country.
