AAPG/Datapages has been participating in the EIP to create a new ISO standard for the structure of metadata in GIS files. Standardization of metadata structure is important for our future because it will enable web-based search indexes to locate and log mapping files available to the public. It will not matter whether the files are open access (they are free) or have user fees associated (they are for sale by private publishers), the important thing is we will be able to know that map information exists and where to get it.
