Councilor Calls for Use of Mindanao’s Solar Energy

Councilor President Elipe said Mindanao has the longest period of dry season and has less rain and typhoons compared to Luzon and Visayas. He said harnessing solar power in the island can complement existing coal-fired plants and hydro energy in Mindanao to take advantage of the Renewable Energy Act. “If we are able to harness and apply solar energy effectively, the potential for sustainable, clean energy is enormous,” Elipe said. The Renewable Energy Act of 2008 exempt renewable energy sources from Value Added Tax (VAT) grants a seven-year income tax holiday and prioritizes the purchase, grid connection and transmission of electricity generated by companies from renewable energy sources.
