Lake Tuz – Dead Sea of Turkey

Lake Tuz (Tuz Golu, “Salt lake”) — is one of the largest hyper salt lakes in the world and the second largest lake in Turkey, with no outlet. Its surface area constitutes 1665 sq.km. The primary feeding sources of the lake are groundwater and precipitation. The water salinity in the lake reaches 340.

During the summer the lake dries up almost entirely exposing an average of 30 cm thick salt layer in August, which can be used to take walks on like on ice. During winter part of the salt is dissolved in the fresh water that is introduced to the lake by precipitation and surface runoff from surrounding lands. The three mines operating in the lake produce 63% of the salt consumed in Turkey. From 2001, Lake Tuz and its neighborhood was declared a specially protected area. Read More
