Tanzania: Example of a Local Initiative

Oikos East Africa has assigned a young Leo Mongandre (26 years old) of Arusha to lead a team of engineers from Italy, Arusha Technical College and from the University of Dar es Salaam to promote use of small rivers, streams and water falls to produce hydro electric power for rural areas. Mr. Mongandre works for Oikos East Africa as technical officer. Oikos is a conservation and development NGO based in Arusha. Leo will work in the company of two able technicians from the University of Dar es Salaam who are capable of constructing mini-hydro electric turbines from scratch to generate electricity.
