Concerned over the shrinking tree population in the city and its suburbs, the forest department is set to launch a census in the Chennai Metropolitan Area, sprawling over 1,189 sq km, in the first week of June. The mammoth two-phase exercise is expected to throw up data on the indigenous vegetation on the city’s landscape as well as on the diversity, density and population.
