Sierra Leone to Triple Power Output

The Sierra Leone government has signed a $750 million (525 million euro) accord with energy company Joule Africa to complete a major hydro-electric power project, state television reported Monday. The Bumbuna hydro-electric project in the north of the country was launched in 1975 and stalled during Sierra Leone’s civil war, with phase one later completed in 2009, providing 50 megawatts of power. Joule Africa will invest between $625 to 750 million over a five year period in the completion of phase two, which will more than triple the country’s energy output by 2017.
