Arctic Rescue Treaty Signed

Norway and the seven other member nations of the Arctic Council have signed a treaty which will coordinate Arctic search-and-rescue missions, as well as plans to prevent a catastrophic oil spill. The treaty was signed in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, with the US, Russia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland represented at the meeting. Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Søre signed the treaty on behalf of Norway, and said that as a coastal state on the Polar Sea, Norway has important obligations with regard to search and rescue in relation to the International law of the Sea.
