Australia Unveils High-Speed Rail Project

Australia laid out a vision Thursday to join the handful of countries with high-speed rail lines, saying the up to 108 billion Australian dollars (US$116.16 billion) project in its eastern states could ease bottlenecks on its transport network as its population surges. The federal government said the rail link would be capable of carrying 54 million passengers a year by 2036, with train speeds reaching over 200 miles an hour on a network connecting the city of Brisbane in rural Queensland state with Sydney and Melbourne further south.
