Slussen Public Exhibition Opens in Stockholm

  • Rating12345

A public exhibition is being held from 3 May to 19 June 2011 at the Sjömanshemmet in central Stockholm to mark the final stage of the public consultation process for the redevelopment of Slussen. The exhibition showcases the masterplan to transform this central Stockholm area into one of the city’s most dynamic civic destinations. Foster + Partners has been working closely with the City of Stockholm and local architects Berg Arkitektkontor, to develop the masterplan vision for this important site between the Baltic sea and the freshwater Lake Mälaren since winning the architectural competition in May 2009.

The masterplan concept is centred around the waterfront location and will create, at its heart, a new water plaza. This will also facilitate greater control of the water level between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic sea, reducing the risk of flooding to Stockholm and the wider regions. The proposals incorporate a rich mixture of new public open spaces, parks and venues, as well as a network of ramps and bridges that provide accessible pedestrian and cycle routes to the waterfront and to Gamla Stan. The masterplan also integrates a new transport hub, combining bus, train, tram and metro connections within a sheltered indoor environment. Read More
