University of Cantabria Breaks New Ground with AutoCAD Civil 3D

The University of Cantabria, based in Santander, Northern Spain, has joined the growing number of European universities and other further education establishments using AutoCAD Civil 3D for both teaching and pioneering development work.   Students of the university’s civil engineering and industrial engineering courses are using the infrastructure design software for a wide range of work – from roadway design to the development of underground cabling and high voltage electricity power lines.  In addition, graduate student and teaching assistant, Rubén Arias Fernández, has used the software for his final project.  Working with Dragados, one of Spain’s leading construction and engineering companies, he has used AutoCAD Civil 3D to link the country’s most widely-used but rudimentary road design tools with a highly-advanced virtual reality program developed by the University of Valencia.   “This integrated system could significantly improve the way designs are shared and communicated and how users can respond to the need for both design and engineering changes,” he explains.“The flexibility of Civil 3D and in particular its open development platform, makes it ideal for students wishing to understand and experiment with 3D infrastructure design,” he adds.
