SIFY – Seeing light at the end of the tunnel will be more than just a catch phrase when Swiss engineers blast through the last Alpine granite barrier Oct 15 at the Gotthard Base Tunnel – the world’s longest rail tunnel. After 25 years of planning and construction, that blast will clear the way for a scheduled 2017 completion of the 57-km-long high-speed and freight rail connection through the Alps.
