CTV NEWS – Brampton, Ont. has become the first city in the GTA to be deemed a safe community by the World Health Organization. Communities that receive the designation, which has only been given to 10 cities in North America, have to meet international community safety standards. Brampton was given the designation after achieving high scores on all six of these WHO indicators:
–An infrastructure governed by a cross-sectional group that is responsible for safety promotion;
–Long-term, sustainable programs covering both genders and all ages, environments, and situations;
–Programs that target high-risk groups and environments, and programs that promote safety for vulnerable groups;
–Programs that document the frequency and causes of injuries;
–Measures to assess programs, processes and effects of changes; and
–Ongoing participation in national and international Safe Communities networks.
