DEUTSCHE WELLE – Water supply is one of the biggest development challenges in Jordan. A large share of the water reserves are in the Jordan Valley, located below sea level. The water has to be piped from there to the consumers – often to cities at an altitude of more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level. The pumps used for the purpose are often decrepit and energy-intensive. Jordan’s water authority is thus one of the largest electricity consumers in the country.
