Troubled Satellite Project Short of $2.5 Billion, EU admits

The European Union’s troubled Galileo satellite navigation (satnav) project needs 1.9 billion euros (2.5 billion dollars) on top of the 3.4 billion euros already budgeted for it, a top official from the bloc admitted on Tuesday. Galileo is intended to make Europe independent of the existing US GPS satnav system and to rival networks planned by Russia, China, Japan and India.
