The urban population was 8662,4 thousand people, rural population was 7347,2 thousand  people. The urban population increased to 206,6 thousand  people or to 2,4 %, and rural – to 821,7 thousand  people or to 12,6 %. The share of the urban population in the country was 54,1 %, rural – 45,9 %, in 1999 their share was 56,4 % and 43,6 % accordingly. The most urbanized regions were Karaganda (the urban population here is more than 77,5 %), Pavlodar (68 %) and Aktyubinsk (61 %). The rural population is concentrated in Almaty (76,9 % from the whole population), North Kazakhstan (60,2 %), Kyzylorda (58,1 %) and Zhambyl (60,4 %) regions, basically. Males population was 7712,2 thousand, female one – 8297,4 thousand people. Males population in comparison with the previous census had increased by 496,8 thousand people or to 6,9 %; Females population increased by 531,5 thousand  people or on 6,8 %. The sex ratio showed the prevalence of females over males (51,8 % and 48,2 % accordingly).
