Province’s Land-use Legislation Needs An Outside Referee

The Alberta government’s proposed land-use framework is a well-intentioned piece of legislation that has become mired in controversy. It seeks to end the free-for-all on Alberta’s landscapes that emerged after the dissolution of regional planning commissions by the Klein government in the mid-1980s. The Alberta Land Stewardship Act and two companion pieces of legislation wisely divides the province into seven large regions based on watersheds.
