Hyderabad’s Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and her husband Banda Chandra Reddy showed their ignorance of the law when they brushed off environment activists who approached them to form the GHMC Biodiversity Committee. Chandra Reddy told the activists that he had formed many committees from ward level to GHMC level and they have not been of any use. What he and his lady wife seem to be unaware of is that under the powerful AP Biodiversity Act, a committee headed by the local body head is empowered to give approval for major projects that may have implications for biodiversity, environment and biological resources in the city and its outskirts.
