It hasn’t rained much, so maybe it’s not getting enough moisture,” Itsuo Ota, 69, said as he felt the moss growing along a mountain path on Yakushima island, Kagoshima Prefecture. Ota has been revising and refining a map he made of the island’s mountains for decades, and cares deeply about any changes to the natural environment.
