Despite the Financial Crisis: People in Germany Call for More Environmental Protection

  • Rating12345

GERMAN GOV – Like a show in the spring of 2010 for the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) with 2008 people representative survey, almost two thirds of respondents (62 percent) believe that the state should do more for the environment. 61 percent are in favor of a pioneering role of Germany in international climate policy.

And 85 percent of respondents agreed with the statement: “We need a consistent shift to renewable energies.” Similar high values of acceptance reaches the environmental goal of “increasing energy efficiency.” Great contributions of the state – through more stringent laws and the removal of environmentally harmful subsidies – are expecting around three-quarters. “The survey refutes fears that the financial crisis would make environmental protection in the eyes of the people in Germany are less important.”, Said UBA President Jochen Flasbarth.

High environmental expectations for the respondents in addition to the state primarily on the economy: large contributions to environmental and climate protection can look for some 90 percent of respondents to industry and energy supply, where they produce more environmentally friendly. do the automotive industry through the development of environmentally friendly cars can do a lot to see around 85 percent.

A majority of respondents also sees opportunities even some environmental protection to do for that: see the population average 58-68 percent of the respondents the chance of environmentally friendly consumer behavior or less car use and less air travel a strip. Contribution to this , many citizens are in their consumer behavior environmentally conscious: Two-thirds of respondents now own words targeted products, which pollute the environment as well. More than half of boycotting products from companies that demonstrably harmful to the environment behave. The expressed environmental awareness is reflected but not consistently reflected in an appropriate environmental behavior. For example, German, only eight percent of the previously switched to green electricity.

In the environmental awareness study 2010 the environment model of the Sinus Institute is used. Shown are sometimes substantial differences in the milieu of environmental awareness and behavior. In particular, the socio-ecological environment is unique and relatively consistent with environmental concerns. The socially disadvantaged, but sometimes the more conservative set environment but also see the need and prospects for environmental and climate protection in general, quite clearly, but are often more cautious with regard to environmental claims and action. In general, among people with lower incomes lower the proportion of respondents who see great environmental potential of the actors.

Even the potential for cultural innovation in society milieu-specific differences are noted: For example, one in four drivers car sharing finds attractive, among them are mostly young and well educated people, women and West German. Also, half the population would welcome the opportunity to borrow objects of daily use such as electrical appliances, garden tools or utensils renovation fee in the immediate living environment. Well-educated and those with higher incomes are significantly more represented here.

Similar social differences are also reflected in the share of committed environmental or nature protection, which has in recent years, more than doubled, from four percent in 2008 to nine percent in the current survey. Here are members of environmental and conservation organizations are often well educated and have a high household income.
