UCL – Professor Hugh Clout has been elected to the Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe) for his sustained research and publication on the geography of France. With occasional forays into recent issues, over the past forty plus years he has concentrated on aspects of the historical geography of France, producing books and articles on French agricultural geography in past times, settlements and landscape studies, and the reconstruction of villages and towns after both world wars. He has also been working on the formation of geographical knowledge in France, examining biographies of French academics, networks of scholarly patronage and the activities of geographical societies and other learned institutions.
