Caspian Sea is related to the category of partially freezing seas with shallow water northern part of the sea freezing every year. In 2011 the sea water temperature dropped below 00C in the first ten-day period of December and young ice formed near Volga river delta. Prevailing strong winds moved the ice edge from north-west to south-east. The optical SPOT 4 iamge, acquired on December 13, 2011 formation of fast ice in the northern part of the Caspian Sea was registered 5-10 km away from the sea shore.
