Hi-tech Bid to Boost Safety on Crossings

Dummy barriers are to be erected at level crossings along with automated scanners which detect when pedestrians or cars are clear as part of a campaign to improve safety and cut costs. Network Rail, which operates Britain’s railways, is also due to fund new police detection vans which use number plate recognition technology to catch motorists who flout the rules. It is hoped the latest technological innovations will save lives without the cost of installing full barriers at crossings which currently only have half-barriers or no barriers.
