Finnish Ministry of the Environment Does an Abrupt About-turn On Its Nitrogen Policy

Minister of the Environment Paula Lehtomäki (Centre) urges that the removal of nitrogen from wastewater be intensified in all parts of the country, as it causes eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. At present, the requirements are rather modest in many places. ”In coastal areas the removal of nitrogen has already been enhanced, but the same standards will have to be met gradually everywhere. It is part of the long-term water policy”, says Lehtomäki. A decree on treating wastewater in sparsely populated areas stipulates that households are required to implement efficient nitrogen removal from wastewater all over the country. The aim is to demand the same standards from municipal wastewater processing centres as soon as their environmental permits expire. Read More
