Zebra Imaging Responds To “Holographic Telepresence” Announcement by University of Arizona Researchers

  • Rating12345

“Zebra Imaging is a pioneer in the development of both holographic print and motion display technologies with a broad portfolio of intellectual property including more than 80 issued and pending patents”, said Al Wargo, Chairman and CEO of Zebra Imaging. “Real-time, full-parallax 3D display products, not requiring any special eye-wear for viewing, are our core competency and primary mission. We are gratified that others share in this vision but are disappointed to see inaccurate claims and inadequate acknowledgments surrounding the recent announcement by the University of Arizona.”

Over the last 7 years, Zebra Imaging has been developing dynamic holographic display technologies and products that provide full-parallax, full-color, wide-angle of view holographic imagery and that update at sub-second frame rates. Recent publications in the journal Nature and accompanying press-releases by University of Arizona laboratory researchers make claims of first achievements of “real-time” and full-parallax “holographic video” that are inaccurate and disingenuous in view of the public record.

Founder & Chief Technology Officer, Michael Klug states, “While we acknowledge the efforts by Dr. Peyghambarian and the University of Arizona research team, it should be noted that their work follows on intellectual property and seminal research and development by Zebra Imaging detailed in Zebra-issued patents (US6,859,293 and US7,227,674).” Klug continues, “Large-scale, full-parallax, pulse laser-based static and dynamic holographic displays have been mainstays of Zebra’s development and product lines for many years, and University of Arizona claims of innovation are incorrect.”

The ZScape™ Motion Display technology and product line is based on a practical technical approach that provides truly real-time, full parallax, holographic 3D today. Mark Lucente, Director of Motion Display Products for Zebra Imaging, points out that “Zebra demonstrated full-parallax holographic motion displays to audiences at the USGIF GEOINT 2008 Conference and a real-time ‘holographic telepresence’ application on the display at the 2009 GEOINT conference. Earlier this year we publicly announced an agreement to integrate the ZScape™ Motion Display product into specific customer applications.” Lucente notes, “At Zebra, holographic video is well beyond the laboratory stage.”
