UK National Address Gazetteer Database to be Launched for Public Sector

Improvements in address data quality are likely to be recorded in the public sector as a result of the launch of the National Address Gazetteer Database (NAGD). The intention of the database is to provide “one definitive source of accurate publicly-owned spatial address data”, with the information being collected and collated from local authorities and the Ordnance Survey. It is hoped the new system, which is due to arrive in April 2011, will bring substantial social and economic benefits to the public sector. “[The database will] allow organisations to readily exchange address information with each other, streamline government services, reduce duplication and facilitate partnership working,” said a statement from the Local Government Association. Plans to bring in the NAGD have also been praised by Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, who claimed it will help to deliver vital savings that will allow more money to go towards frontline services.
