Teledyne Optech to Announce New Airborne System at ASPRS Imaging & Geospatial Technology Forum (IGTF)

April 7, 2016 — Teledyne Optech is pleased to announce that it will unveil a truly innovative airborne collection system at the ASPRS Imaging & Geospatial Technology Forum (IGTF) on  April 11-15 in Fort Worth, TX. The forum will also see a presentation on a recent survey in Panama by the Optech CZMIL (Coastal Zone Mapping and Imaging Lidar) Nova, and details of the Optech Galaxy’s SwathTRAK™ technology.

The new airborne system is an exciting new direction for airborne data collection platforms, offering an innovative and efficient model for surveying smaller areas and corridors. Based on collaboration with our parent company, Teledyne Technologies, this product features several new techniques that will push down costs and improve ease of use for airborne surveyors. It will be on display on the exhibition floor at booth 702, where visitors can see the new system hardware in person and get a detailed explanation of its capabilities.

At ASPRS, Teledyne Optech Research Engineer Vinod Ramnath and corporate partner IIC Technologies will present results from a recent project by the Optech CZMIL Nova airborne lidar-imaging sensor system around Gatun Lake, Panama. As part of the CZMIL Project Program, the Panama Canal Authority (APC) commissioned IIC Technologies to survey the waters of Gatun Lake near the Canal using the CZMIL. This presentation will describe the techniques used by CZMIL and its HydroFusion processing workflow to achieve excellent depth penetration despite the very turbid water. Mr. Ramnath will also compare CZMIL’s performance to independent Secchi depth measurements taken in several locations around the lake, and discuss current methodologies for characterizing water turbidity and predicting lidar penetration depths. Attendees interested in learning about lidar bathymetry or seeing what to expect from the CZMIL Project Program can visit Room 104 at 2:00 pm on April 13.

Visitors can also get in-depth answers about how the Optech Galaxy airborne lidar system can reduce their flight costs with its patent pending SwathTRAK technology.
At the Teledyne poster presentation, Business Manager Michael Sitar will show how high- relief terrain such as mountains can create gaps between flightlines for traditional lidar systems, forcing users to cluster their lines closer together and reducing survey efficiency. SwathTRAK uses a dynamic field of view to adjust the Galaxy’s scan angle on the fly in response to changing terrain elevation letting users save time and money by spacing their flightlines farther apart. Mr.Sitar will be on hand to answer questions about SwathTRAK and the Galaxy in Room 202C from 4:00 – 5:30 pm on April 13.
