Modern satellite-based equipment enables to seas surface detect oil films, assess the water muddiness degree and other parameters; make shallow water areas terrain bathymetry maps, detect and monitor algae blooming areas, reveal illegal economic activities on water bodies, including poaching and illegal nearshore construction.
All Russian seas are included in the zone of operational monitoring conducted with the help of ground receiving stations of ScanEx Research & Development Center. This allows carrying out maritime monitoring of ice, ecological and navigation situations, studying population of sea animals, providing information support in case of emergencies and disasters at sea.
Solution of missions set is possible with a comprehensive application of near real-time all-weather radar data acquired from RADARSAT-2, RADARSAT-1 and TerraSAR-X satellites, as well as with the help of optical satellite imagery data. Quite often ground survey data, ground layer condition indicators and “ocean-atmosphere” system properties are used in combination with satellite imagery.
Space imagery data about ice situation, especially along the shipping routes may be the sole operational data source about the situation within the area of interest. Satellite images help assess ice situation and are applied, in particular, for ice-breakers optimal navigation planning with due account for actual situation. Satellite images are used to draw ice and navigation maps, to describe detected oil spills. In some water areas the ice edge position is estimated in relation to an industrial facility of the customer, as well as ice edge dynamics and position change forecast is developed.
The 6th International Conference “Earth from Space – the Most Effective Solutions” will take place on October 1-3, 2013 at the Moscow Region “Vatutinki” resort hotel. Key topics of the conference are: nature protection and access to space images and near real-time satellite-based monitoring services from civil society in Russia and abroad. Conference organizers are: ScanEx Research & Development Center, NGO Transparent World.
