ICT applications can help improve the management of water resources, water assets and water-related risks, while players in the ICT sector can gain access to a growing global market in the water sector. Tekes has been implementing a programme aimed at water sector development for three years. The programme covers several projects that are developing new ICT applications for the water sector, while opportunities exist for many more.
”The ICT sector is a key development catalyst for the water sector. The water sector is interested in employing ICT, but the work is only just beginning. So far there are only a few applications in use, and even those are often quite traditional compared to the situation in other sectors such as energy,” says Piia Moilanen, Programme Manager, Water Programme, Tekes.
There are around 60 enterprise projects being implemented under the Water Programme, half of which are employing ICT to some extent. The number of ICT-focused projects in the programme totals around 10.
According to Moilanen, players in the water sector should expand their views on the opportunities provided by ICT and be able to utilise advanced tools to improve their cost-efficiency or succeed in an increasingly intense competition setting.
