For the first time, national mapping authority Ordnance Survey is running a programme for paid summer internships. Great Britain’s national mapping authority collects, maintains and distributes the most accurate and up-to-date digital mapping of the whole country.
Ordnance Survey is recruiting a number of undergraduates to join their programme and work on a variety of business projects, including building web applications using digital mapping datasets or developing their popular online consumer mapping service, OS getamap.
Ordnance Survey’s database holds the master map of the country with 450 million geographic features, from which Ordnance Survey creates products and services to meet customers’ needs, from supporting emergency services with vital road and land information, to enabling local authorities to plan optimum routes for gritting during severe weather. Ordnance Survey is always looking for new and innovative uses for mapping data. This year Ordnance Survey launched OS MapFinder, an iOS app designed for outdoor leisure users and are now developing an Android version of the app.
The recognition of the importance of high-quality mapping data has exploded in recent years, and the demand from customers for up to date, accurate location data has never been greater. Digital mapping data from Ordnance Survey now plays an important part across businesses, government and touches on all our daily lives.
The new summer internships programme has roles available for undergraduates interested in working with geospatial data, technology and products as well as roles in Human Resources and Marketing. Ordnance Survey’s Head of Human Resources, Nadine Prior, explains: “We’re aiming to give our interns a real-life insight into how a career at Ordnance Survey could progress and develop their skills and confidence in the workplace. Any undergraduates who would like to work on real business projects and help us find business solutions should grab the opportunity with both hands.”
Working at the organisation’s Southampton head office, the placements will last for 6–8 weeks over the summer with flexible start dates. All of the intern roles are paid.
