Leica Geosystems integrates Sony’s IMX811 sensor into TerrainMapper-3 system

  • Rating12345

Leica Geosystems has integrated Sony’s latest IMX811 sensor into the Leica TerrainMapper-3 topographic Lidar system – enhancing the system’s image collection capabilities. This development is made possible by the new Leica MFC250 camera module, designed to maximize the performance of the IMX811 sensor.

The IMX811 is a 247-megapixel sensor with a 2.81 µm pixel size, offering a high level of resolution and performance. Its integration enables more efficient acquisition of high-resolution imagery – supporting a range of demanding geospatial applications.

Sharpness at high speeds

A key operational challenge in aerial surveying is maintaining image sharpness at higher aircraft speeds. Without appropriate compensation, aircraft motion during image exposure can result in noticeable image blur – an issue that is amplified when working with smaller pixel sizes such as those in the IMX811.

To address this, Leica Geosystems combines its proprietary mechanical forward motion compensation (FMC) technology with advanced lens systems and the Leica PAV200 gyro-stabilised mount. This combination supports consistent image quality, even under challenging conditions and at high speeds.

The MFC250 camera module was developed and validated through a series of real-world tests conducted over the past year at Leica Geosystems’ headquarters in Switzerland. The system is now also in use in the United States, where it supports image collection for the Hexagon Content Program.
