The Garda Mapping Section surveys crime scenes and prepares scaled drawings and maps for investigative and judicial purposes throughout Ireland. Additionally the section provides administrative maps for operational purposes and specific security maps for major events emergency planning and VIP visits. To improve the simplicity of access to the information held within the maps, which is critical in making the maps more usable, the Garda Mapping section is now providing them in the GeoPDF format. With the successful implementation of the GeoPDF file format in the first stage of the project, An Garda Siochana will look to extend their use in other areas.
GeoPDF maps can be opened simply by double clicking them as the Adobe Reader is preloaded on nearly every PC in the World. With the addition of the TerraGo Toolbar (freely available for download), users can access the geographical information held within the GeoPDF and not have to learn how to use new viewing software.
Paul Creaner of the Garda Mapping Team explains more about their use of GeoPDF: “We must strive to attain solutions that will accelerate innovation and efficiencies in all aspects of the organisation. With the use of GeoPDF maps, we will have the capacity to deliver key information in the form of intelligent maps both to members in their local areas and those in operational and intelligence led sections.”
