Amazon Makes Landsat Data Even More Available

  • Rating12345

March 20, 2015 — As part of Amazon Web Services (AWS) commitment to White House’s Climate Data Initiative, the company announced today that 85,000 Landsat 8 scenes are now conveniently accessible in AWS Public Data Sets.

Landsat, managed by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is the longest running program to gather Earth imagery from space, and has served as the backbone for many public and private sector resource-management and change-monitoring projects. Organizations rely on Landsat for trusted data on a range of significant issues, from assessing agricultural crop vigor to tracking urban sprawl. However, Landsat imagery files have traditionally been time consuming and expensive to acquire, store, and analyze. As a pre-processed public data set, the data can now be accessed more efficiently and quickly deployed for analysis and information extraction.

The publicly available data, coupled with available resources, open source tools and expertise will vastly accelerate research by enabling fluid access to actionable Earth imaging analytics. Forward-looking companies – including Esri, Planet Labs, MapBox, MathWorks and Development Seed – are already harnessing the power of this data in unique ways to advance our nation’s social, environmental, and economic well-being.
