American Sentinel University Details Importance of Enterprise Geospatial Strategy at GIS in the Rockies 2013

  • Rating12345

American Sentinel University will be a featured participant and key sponsor at the upcoming GIS in the Rockies 2013 – Local to Global: Geospatial on the Move conference Oct. 9-10 at The Cable Center in Denver, Colo.

Stephen McElroy, GIS chair for American Sentinel will serve as the GIS education track chair for this year’s event and is a featured presenter in the Geographic Education: Increasing Geospatial Literacy track.

His presentation ‘Teaching Enterprise GIS: From Theory to Practice,’ Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. MST in the Kahn Room will discuss how to develop an enterprise geospatial strategy roadmap for the workplace and highlight American Sentinel’s new 3-credit course ‘Developing an Enterprise Level Geospatial Strategy’ and a key component of the university’s online Master of Geospatial Information Systems (MGIS) and the Geospatial Information Systems Graduate Certificate (GIS Graduate Certificate) programs.

“Now that companies have begun to understand the strategic benefits of GIS and how to effectively adopt it to maintain control of information and applications, they’ll find that geospatial information can also be integrated with other enterprise applications for greater competitive advantages such as executive analysis and decisions-support systems to create a need for increased geospatial literacy in the workplace,” says Dr. McElroy.

In addition, Dr. McElroy will present a 5-Minute Lightning Talk, ‘Using Badges to Document Competency-based Geospatial Learning’ Oct. 9 at 2:35 p.m. in the Kahn Room, which will discuss how the university’s new Geospatial Learning Lab helps students demonstrate content mastery through a forum where they can interact with instructors and each other in an active learning community. To track achievement, students receive badges to signify increased competency, like a university’s equivalent of scouting merit badges.

“Our goal is to foster an engaged student population that interacts with others and exchanges ideas and information,” says Dr. McElroy. “Sharing insights and collaborating on projects are hallmarks of the contemporary workplace and promoting an active learning community helps to prepare our students for a lifetime of success in the field of GIS.”

American Sentinel University will also be exhibiting at booth number 104 Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. MST and Thursday, Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. MST in the Cable Center at the University of Denver campus in Denver, Colo. American Sentinel is also the sponsor for the Wednesday evening social event Oct. 9 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. MST in the exhibit hall at the Cable Center.
