ScanEx RDT to Participate in First Russian Conference on Environmental GIS

  • Rating12345

On 28-29 September 2013 the first practical conference “Using GIS and Remote Sensing for Conservation of Nature” with international participation of the environmental GIS community will take place in Russia. Specialists of ScanEx Research and Development Center will participate in the conference and share their experience of using satellite imagery and space monitoring technologies to meet the challenges of environmental protection.

ScanEx’s Director Olga Gershenzon will make a presentation and talk about the possibilities of the public space monitoring system “Space Patrol.” This system is a public interest initiative, aimed at providing a new quality culture of cooperation between the authorities and the civil society. The regular operational updating of the coverage of Russian territory with space images and data posting on the open portal is expected as part of the project. Based on satellite images, as well as other geospatial data available on the portal (cadastral subdivision, the boundaries of protected natural areas, protection forests, water protection zones, local forest divisions and net of rides), users will be able to carry out full monitoring of activities carried out at present time.

At the September 28-29conference the organizers plan to devote a lot of time to technical master-classes, which will be held in Russian and English. All participants will have the unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with the possibilities of web-services and software, which are often used in environmental projects. ScanEx RDC experts will host the following thematic workshops:

Monitoring of wildfires. Moderator – Project Manager George Potapov – will talk about the entire chain of integrated services of ScanEx RDC for monitoring natural phenomena and events from space. The service operation will be demonstrated on the global fire maps, which was released in April of this year. You will also learn how to make your own GIS project based on online-platform GeoMixer and develop an application using this technology.

Monitoring of forest loggings based on high and medium resolution data. Head of the Thematic department of ScanEx RDC Andrei Sarychev will tell how to automatically search for changes based on multi-band data, multi-temporal analysis, binary classification and how to use raster filters to improve image interpretation in the Scanex Image Processor software package for remote sensing data processing.

Space monitoring with high revisiting frequency of agricultural activities by using f high and medium resolution data. Head of the Thematic department of ScanEx RDC Andrei Sarychev will share experience of vegetation indices computation, of doing multi-temporal classification, monitoring of agricultural crops development, land use assessments in the Scanex Image Processor software package for remote sensing data processing.

Participation in the conference is free. More details about the program activities can be found here: http://gis-lab.info/qa/scgisconf-2013.html.
