Mersea Oil Spill Forecast Demonstrations on the Web

  • Rating12345

The Mersea project includes demonstrations of the use of Mersea ocean forecast products in marine oil spill modelling and forecasting. A number of demonstrations will be performed during the Fall 2007. In September and October, there will be two deployments of oil-emulating drifters in the Mediterranean Sea for the purpose of validating the forecasts from Mersea-driven oil spill models. The Oceanography Centre, University of Cyprus (OC-UCY) is conducting a drifter experiment from 17 September in the eastern Mediterranean, off Cyprus. In early October, Cedre (France), under contract to met.no, will deploy drifters in the western Mediterranean, near Nice. In both cases, the oil spill forecasting services at MeteoFrance, met.no and OC-UCY will produce a range of forecasts of the “oil slicks” using various Mersea ocean data products.
