Over 12000 Landsat-5 Scenes Acquired in 2010 by Russian Receiving Stations

  • Rating12345

The second stage of the International Project “Global Land Survey 2010” (GLS-2010) to create a full coverage of the Earth with Landsat 5 and 7images is complete. Starting on June 1, 2010 ScanEx RDC has received Landsat-5 data to its own network of ground stations located in Moscow, Irkutsk and Magadan. For imaging of the Arctic areas the ERS center in Megion (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area) was used.

During the imaging season within the frames of the GLS-2010 Project ScanEx Center had 642 ground passed with the total duration of over 70 hours. More than 12000 Landsat-5 scenes of the Russian territory and adjacent areas were acquired. In 2009 (from June 1 till October 1) over 15000 Landsat-5 scenes of Eurasia have been received for the purpose of the GLS-2010 Project.

Landsat 5 satellite that was initially expected to operate for three years only, is still up and running (26 years on orbit), which the absolute record for RS space vehicles. Landsat-5 data that were acquired in real-time mode in summer 2010 were used for fire situation monitoring in Russia. It became possible to monitor fires using Landsat-5 images due to the availability of IR-band imaging system onboard.  www.scanex.ru
