AeroGRID has launched a new WMS service (Web Mapping Service) to enable customers to stream Pan-European imagery directly to their desktops. AeroGRID is now in the process of loading 1.7 million km² (over 1 million square miles) of 12.5cm to 50cm resolution imagery, of Western Europe.  This includes the whole of Benelux, Britain, France, Germany and Spain, all produced by professional survey organisations both government and private.

WMS is increasingly popular because it reduces network overhead and the need to manage and update large constantly changing datasets.  It is a standard protocol for streaming georeferenced map imagery over the Internet to web based applications, GIS and CAD software. WMS feeds only load imagery that a user actually needs to see rather than a whole dataset, which often results in lengthy load times or delays when panning and zooming. Aerial photography which is a large dataset can put a heavy strain on a network especially when it is being accessed by many users at the same time. Having an external source available through WMS reduces network load and the costs associated with data storage and management.

The imagery is accompanied by comprehensive metadata including a statement of accuracy to enable users to validate their projects with confidence. Test accounts will be made available to prospective clients.

“I am pleased we have been able to launch our WMS service with such an extensive dataset covering over 50% of the population of Europe,” said Miles Taylor, General Manager. “We are in advanced negotiations to expand the service further to include a number of neighbouring countries and we are confident that AeroGRID will soon  be able to offer WMS feeds for most other European nations. Since most organisations contributing data maintain and update their own imagery the AeroGRID WMS service will continue to be the most up to date.

AeroGRID was created to provide a one-stop-shop for aerial imagery. By marshalling partner resources, which include 12 survey aircraft and high-resolution digital cameras AeroGRID is able to extend coverage and engage in a regular revision programme that provides extensive and up to date aerial imagery for the market.
