TerraSAR-X and X-TanDEM in Close Formation Flight

  • Rating12345

Measuring the World in 3D – this goal is now the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and closer to the space company Astrium, a crucial step: The radar satellite tandem-X on 14.10.2010 with its “twin” TerraSAR-X the close formation flight passed. The two Earth observation satellites tracked at last at a distance of 20 kilometers. This represents a difference of almost three seconds of flight time. Now the two satellites fly together on “equal terms” and with their radar antennas in a position to make the same shots of the same area. The aim of the mission is to create a highly accurate, three-dimensional elevation model of the Earth’s surface. These three years of parallel operation of the satellites is necessary. With the transition in the close formation, the final preparation stage of TanDEM-X mission is achieved. The year is to begin routine operations. Read More
