Sliding Truss Keeps Ohio River Bridge Open

After several years of public debate and planning, construction has begun on the Milton-Madison Bridge along the Kentucky-Indiana border in the US. The work involves reinforcing the bridge’s original support piers as well as replacing the ageing superstructure with a wider and safer one.


Open road
Despite the project’s scale, closures of U.S. 421, the road which crosses the bridge, will be limited to ten days thanks to innovative construction techniques. Buckland & Taylor – a COWI subsidiary based in Vancouver, Canada – is part of the winning project team that includes contractor Walsh Construction Company and the lead engineering firm Burgess & Niple Engineers.
