Woolpert Providing Geospatial Support, Heating Overhaul, Taxiway Rehab for WPAFB

  • Rating12345

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s (WPAFB) 88th Air Base Wing have contracted with Woolpert for multiple architecture, engineering and geospatial projects at WPAFB.

The Dayton-based firm is preparing an area development plan (ADP) for one of the centers at the base, designing a heating system, rehabilitating two taxiways, and providing geospatial application and database support for the Air Force GeoBase program.

Woolpert signed a one-year, $4.7 million GeoBase contract last summer to provide consistent, cost-effective geospatial information across multiple installations. The GeoBase concept aims to achieve economies of scale through a “one installation, one map” plan.

Per the engineering services provided, the USACE has commissioned Woolpert to prepare design drawings for replacing a high-temperature hot water heating system for a portion of Area A with independent, natural gas-fired heating system at each building, and to design modifications to the existing utilities to accommodate the new boilers.

The affected distribution line had failed a reported eight times since 2011, according to the USACE, creating an inefficiency of up to $1.4 million in estimated annual energy losses. This heating system serves multiple facilities at the base, including the Air Force Materiel Command’s headquarters campus, the Visiting Quarters, the Temporary Lodging Facilities and the base hospital.

Woolpert, which has extensive airport and aviation experience in addition to its widespread military work, also will design improvements and repairs for two taxiways at the base.

These projects are currently underway.
