Albuquerque, N.M. – Verus® Research, a New Mexico-based team of scientists and engineers specializing in advanced research and development, announces it has received a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract to support the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate. The $750,000, two-year contract builds on previous work Verus Research has completed and focuses on spacecraft fault detection, identification, and causation using machine learning.
“We are honored to receive this contract that recognizes our past work with spacecraft fault detection, as well as our future concepts” said Dr. J. Mark DelGrande, chief technology officer at Verus Research. “Our team works tirelessly to create technologies that provide meaningful solutions for our clients. We are confident that this contract will result in innovations that will be used in the space domain for years to come.”
The new program will seek to develop the ability for a spacecraft to self-diagnose the root causes of on-board anomalies and develop potential mitigation paths. Verus Research will deliver AFMaR, (Autonomous Fault Monitoring and Recovery) software that can be installed on board a spacecraft and, once connected to the vehicle’s telemetry systems, process faults and identify recovery strategies. AFMaR will increase spacecraft resilience and responsiveness while reducing the manpower required for mission operations and monitoring. It is also structured to provide “trusted autonomy,” enabling independent spacecraft action that is reliably conducted in a safe manner.
