Seisland Surveys Wins Esri Canada’s Award of Excellence in GIS

  • Rating12345

CALGARY, Esri Canada User Conference, May 29, 2015 — Rapid access to asset information is valuable to companies in nearly all industries, especially to those in oil and gas where there is constant risk of pipeline ruptures, oil spills and fires.

Having the ability to locate a pipeline or a well at a moment’s notice, without the need to go on site or browse through piles of blueprints, can make all the difference in effectively responding to an emergency. Seisland Surveys provides this advantage through TriliGIS, a cloud-based oil and gas data repository for maps and asset information built on geographic information system (GIS) technology. For their outstanding use of GIS, Esri Canada today presented Seisland Surveys with an Award of Excellence.

Launched in 2010, TriliGIS is an affordable, hosted solution for small and midsize companies that may not have the resources to deploy and maintain their own GIS infrastructure. Seisland Surveys developed the solution using ArcGIS, Esri’s GIS platform that provides advanced data integration and mapping capabilities. With a monthly subscription fee, Seisland’s customers can store an unlimited number of spatial and non-spatial datasets (e.g., imagery, forms and spreadsheets) and authorize as many users as they like, including their exploration team, facility superintendents and health, safety and environment managers. Users can log in, view and update field asset data anytime from their desktop or mobile device. They can use the same archive of spatial data to create various customized maps according to their needs.

“ArcGIS allows us to deliver new services that are highly useable by customers,” said Garvin Geck, president, Seisland Surveys. “Through TriliGIS, we’ve expanded our portfolio with an effective online communication and collaboration solution that goes beyond our traditional print map products. As well, ArcGIS gives us more options for delivering services such as 3D laser scans and unmanned aerial vehicle data. It helps us provide unique and innovative GIS services that differentiate us from our competitors.”

TriliGIS is built with customizable information fields attached to each object on the map – such as wells, pipelines and residences – and supports customizable queries. Map layers can be individually selected and layers selectively printed to suit each user’s needs. Users can also zero in on an area and view every physical asset in detail, including the data attached to each object, such as a well’s production composition and volume, or contact information for a residence. They can overlay a plume model to aid in emergency response planning and draw buffers around emergency planning zones to quickly create contact lists for affected residences and commercial buildings. The solution also allows users to easily gather information for drilling or facility construction plans and avoid conflicting operations such as seismic field work coinciding with well-site construction.

“Safety is a top priority among oil and gas companies,” noted Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada. “For emergency response plans to be safely and efficiently executed, decision-makers need to have all relevant information at hand. TriliGIS enables this and more. It’s an outstanding solution that shows the power of GIS in organizing information and serving it where and when it’s needed.”

Seisland Surveys continues to enhance TriliGIS to deliver new services and expand their market. The company is currently testing new interfaces to host seismic data and deliver 3D laser-scanned and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data to customers. They are also expanding the solution’s capabilities to serve companies in the forestry, landfill and construction industries.
