Satellite Imagery of the Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

On February 22, 2011, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Christchurch in New Zealand’s South Island, causing loss of life and severe damage to the city. Imagery from COSMO-SkyMed and GeoEye-1 satellites is helping to analyse the consequences. The GeoEye-1 image at right shows some of the most serious damage in the centre of the city: the fallen spire of the Cathedral, the collapsed CTV building, the Grand Chancellor Hotel, the tallest building in the city, leaning at a dangerous angle. Below is a Multi-temporal Coherence Map produced by the e‑GEOS Rapid Mapping Service. Information and imagery on this site will continue to be updated in the coming days.
