Prince Harry will attend a briefing by MapAction on Wednesday 16 March to learn more about the charity’s response to the recent Nepal earthquakes, ahead of his tour to the country later this month.
His Royal Highness, who has been Royal Patron of MapAction since 2007, will meet the charity’s Chief Executive, Liz Hughes, and three MapAction volunteers to find out more about its contribution to the humanitarian relief efforts following the 2015 earthquakes, both on the ground in Nepal and remotely from the UK.
An award-winning humanitarian mapping charity, MapAction uses skilled volunteers to save lives and minimise suffering by making the response to humanitarian emergencies as efficient and effective as possible. When a disaster strikes, MapAction deploys volunteer mapping professionals to the scene to help coordinate the response and get aid to where it is needed most. Since 2002, MapAction has undertaken 59 emergency missions, including responses to earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons and conflict-related crises.
Following the 2015 Nepal earthquakes, MapAction delivered a four-month response which included helping to coordinate search-and-rescue efforts and analysing the priority needs of affected communities.
Over the course of his forthcoming tour of Nepal, Prince Harry will meet those affected by the Nepal earthquakes of April and May 2015, and learn more about efforts being made to restore buildings of historic significance and to assist disaster preparedness.
