MARKHAM, Ontario, Canada—March 31, 2015 — PCI Geomatics, a world leading developer of remote sensing and photogrammetric software and systems, announced today that it has signed a Strategic Education Alliance Agreement with Stellenbosch University, in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

PCI Geomatics created the ‘PCI Geomatics Education Alliance Program’ to promote cooperation and knowledge exchange through strong reciprocal relationships with top educational institutions. Under the terms of this agreement, PCI Geomatics provides software licenses to support teaching and research activities in exchange for insights into the work being conducted at the University with PCI Geomatics software. The program fosters communication between the University and PCI scientists, and provides an outlet to the commercial world, highlighting the research conducted at the University. The agreement recognizes Stellenbosch University as the sole PCI Technology Center of Excellence in the country of South Africa.

“PCI greatly values the contributions of higher-learning institutions to advance our collective knowledge of remote sensing science and applications,” said Arnold Hougham, VP of Sales and Marketing at PCI Geomatics. “PCI’s Education Alliance Program acts as a beacon for teaching, research, and innovation. I am impressed with the research conducted at Stellenbosch University and pleased that the school has chosen to partner with PCI.”

The Strategic Alliance will focus not only on providing leading edge instructional software and materials, but will also provide opportunities for students to develop innovative solutions by leveraging the Geomatica platform, which features an open source Python API. Students will develop practical examples of integrated applications that use Geomatica together with other technology to address geospatial processing challenges in South Africa.

“PCI Geomatics software provides excellent tools for conveying the fundamentals of Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing,” said Professor Adriaan van Niekerk, Director of the Centre for Geographical Analysis at Stellenbosch University. “I am looking forward to working with PCI Geomatics in the future via this partnership.”
