Esri Canada today announced that the Government of Manitoba has selected the company to provide geographic information system (GIS) technology and services for creating a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) for the province. The SDI supports increased efficiency through a shared structure that will bring together all of Manitoba’s government mapping data and services. This will allow organizations and the public to easily access these resources and inform decision-making. To cost-effectively pursue this project, the Province signed an enterprise license agreement that provides unlimited access to Esri’s ArcGIS technology, which will serve as the foundation for the SDI.
“Geographic knowledge deepens our understanding of many issues,” says Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada. “It adds a new dimension to analyses and allows decision-makers to discover new trends and insights about various concerns including urban planning, mineral exploration, agriculture and health care. With a spatial data infrastructure, Manitoba will have an effective framework for managing and serving up this knowledge so that government and citizens can collaborate to solve various challenges.”
In partnership with the Province of Manitoba, Esri Canada will design and develop a spatial data warehouse where all provincial geographic data, maps and applications will be stored and maintained. Esri’s Portal for ArcGIS solution will enable the Province to integrate internal and external mapping services deployed on-premises or in the cloud. The solution will help them to implement best practices for data management, planning and analysis, field mobility and visualization of data. Users will be able to pull information from the data warehouse through an interactive Web map.
The SDI will allow the Province to build on its success in applying geographic information and technology to improve operations. They use GIS to support many areas including the Manitoba Land Initiative, Red River flood protection, emergency management, agri-food mapping, mineral resource management and improving learning in public schools. The SDI will also provide a scalable platform as the Province increases its inventory of remotely sensed data and aerial photography.
The shared infrastructure will allow cost reductions and centralized data management. With better access to consistent spatial data, decision-makers can improve planning and development of policy and programs in all areas of government to deliver better citizen services.
