4        CURTIN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, TO ESTABLISH NEW GNSS RESEARCH GROUP

(5 research staff positions, 4 PhD positions)

Background The coming years will show a proliferation of Global and Regional Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS/RNSS). This promise of a broader multi-frequency, multi-constellation “system of systems” has the potential to enable a wide range of demanding applications for high-accuracy Australian GNSS/RNSS users. To improve Australia’s capability in utilising the next generation GNSSs and to come to a fullest exploitation of the opportunities created, Curtin University of Technology will establish a new GNSS research group. The group’s research programme aims at developing theory, models and methods that will enable future GNSSs to fulfil the high-accuracy and high-integrity requirements of tomorrow’s geospatial information needs in the Earth-, atmospheric- and space-sciences. This GNSS programme is also timely because of the forthcoming GNSS CORS network across Australia as part of the AuScope Geospatial programme. This will provide an excellent large-area ‘field laboratory’ in which to first test, then implement, the results generated by this programme. The GNSS group will use state-of-the-art equipment and software, and involve close collaborative links with other universities, industry and government, both in Australia and overseas.

Applications Applications are invited for 5 Postdoctoral Research Staff (full-time, fixed-term, maximum 5 years initially) and 4 PhD positions in the following thematic areas:

(1) GNSS surveying and geodesy (e.g., RTK, PPP and CORS networks),

(2) GNSS remote sensing (e.g., meteorology, reflectometry, ionospheric sounding)

(3) Air/space-based GNSS applications (e.g., relative navigation, attitude determination, formation-flying)

(4) GNSS software receiver (e.g., design/implementation, CDMA DSP)

(5) GNSS quality control (e.g., integrity theory, ambiguity resolution, validation)

The general team strategy is to exploit the diversity of the multi-constellation GNSS and the unique properties of their ultra-precise, multi-frequency carrier-phase tracking data to enable high-precision, high-integrity, real-time kinematic GNSS parameter estimation.

Responsibilities/Duties of research staff

• Contribute significantly to the above GNSS research programme(s)

• Promote the research programmes by publication of research papers

• Provide regular reports on the progress of research projects

• Contribute to the research planning and coordination activities of the group

• Establish and maintain collaborative links with all participants

Requirements for the research staff

• Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, such as geomatics, geodesy, aerospace engineering or telecommunications engineering

• Demonstrated expertise in GNSS or related fields; good knowledge and understanding of GNSS applications

• Computer programming and real-data handling skills

• A demonstrated flair for research planning and implementation in a team environment

• Ability to work to tight deadlines and timeframes and manage a range of activities effectively

• Excellent English written and verbal communication skills

• Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills

• A commitment to maintain a high standard of professional work

Salary and Benefits: Postdoctoral researcher salary range A$62,701 to A$104,500 per annum, depending upon qualifications and experience. Interstate and overseas appointees will receive some removal assistance. Curtin University also offers a generous superannuation and salary packaging programme.
